Group Plans "Part 2" Regional Water Study

Part 2 - Texas Water Resources as a Commodity

The forum will be an opportunity for LWV members from across our watershed to learn about the issues.

The LWV-TX study of "Texas Water Resources as a Commodity"

The group who planned a regional water forum last year, is planning Part 2 to be held Sept. 24, 2011,9:30am - 4:15 pm in San Antonio at the San Antonio Water System headquarters. We will be bringing speakers who can address aspects of the water study not addressed at last year's forum. The forum will be an opportunity for LWV members from across our watershed to get information that will aid the local consensus meetings.

Committee members are: Jensie Madden, Comal Area; Evelyn Bonavita and Annalisa Peace, San Antonio Area; Dianne Wassenich, San Marcos; Dorothy Knight, Wimberley Valley; Kathy Hunt, Victoria; and Diane McMahon and Frances Lovett, Kerrville.

A Letter from President Phyllis Ingram

PREPARE FOR LWV-TX WATER CONSENSUS LWV REGIONAL WATER FORUM

With this current drought, water is a concern for all of us. Come to San Antonio to learn about the water challenges we face in Texas and the possibilities for solutions.
How can Texas best manage our limited water resources? How can the state prepare for increasing demands on water resources because of population growth and climate change? What do other states do? What problems are associated with transferring water from one area to another? How can the rights to groundwater be balanced between landowners and the whole community? What are some of the processes being used in our region to protect water resources?
These are some of the questions that our League will be considering when we come together to form a consensus on these issues later this fall. Study and consensus is the process that LWV uses to adopt new positions. At the end of the current study of "Texas Water Resources as a Commodity," LWV-TX may have new position statements about water, depending on what members decide.
In order to help our members prepare for the consensus meeting, our League has been part of a planning group of six LWVs in our region to bring together an expert group of speakers. This regional meeting will give our members a chance to hear from experts across the region, and to interact with other LWV members in our watershed.
For those of you who attended our successful Regional Water Forum a year ago, this forum will cover all new information--the "Part 2" that you requested. With the drought causing much concern, this Water Forum should prove even more popular than last year's. The forum will be open to the public, so tell your friends.
Panelists who are experts on the above questions are being invited to speak at the forum. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. Lunch will be available at a nominal cost. An agenda with registration details will be sent soon.
The LWV planning committee for the forum is LWV-San Antonio Area (Annalisa Peace and Evelyn Bonavita), LWV-Victoria (Kathy Hunt), LWV-San Marcos (Dianne Wassenich), LWV-Wimberley Valley MAL (Dorothy Knight), LWV-Kerrville Area (Diane McMahon and Frances Lovett), and LWV-Comal Area (Jensie Madden).
Make a plan now to carpool with other LWV members and friends to San Antonio on Saturday, Sept. 24.
